| This song was originally created in 1991, by the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations' Seafood Center. It was created to help encourage children to eat more fish. It was played in the fish sections of supermarkets everywhere, and began to be distributed by cassette (CD would come later, but it could only be purchased from the Center itself). In 2001, popularity of the song resurfaced, making the demand for the song to be purchased on CD in other locations apart from only at the Center, too great to ignore. Also, this song is absolutely full of plays on words involving fish. It's always the name of a fish integrated into another word, making it sound "normal". the "iwashi" in "iwashite" is "sardine", the "tai" in "taishita" is "red snapper", the "ika" in "ikashita" is "squid", the "karei" in "karei ni henshin" is "flounder". "masu masu" is doubling up on "masu", which means trout. "buri buri" is doubling up on "buri", which means "king fish".
"sake" means "salmon", and the "hirame" in "hirameku" means "halibut". It should also be noted that "Sayori" and "Suzuki", while being perfectly normal Japanese names, also mean "stickleback" and "sea bass". |
