Chara is a nickname for singer Satou Miwa, and also the name she has gone by all of her career. It came from her elementary school days, where she was called "chara chara" (scatterbrained) by her teacher.

Most have always considered Chara to be quite an original artist, both because of her image and sound. She also has a reputation for having quite an eccentric personality. She has switched directions musically a few times over the course of her career, and has also acted in movies ("Picnic" and "Swallowtail Butterfly"). Her husband is even an actor, who she met during the filming of "Picnic" (Satou Tadanobu). Perhaps because of a similarity in singing voices, she has also collaborated with former Judy and Mary vocalist Yuki (both with just the two of them, as well as in an all girl group called Mean Machine).
