Jero (short for his real name, Jerome White) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania . Before becoming a professional enka singer, Jero was a computer engineer (he graduated in 2003, shortly before moving to Japan). He is Japan's first black enka singer, and was inspired to become one because of his Japanese grandmother. He became noticed by participating in NHK's nodo jiman amateur singing contest. Many Japanese think that the fact that he is young and international will spark an interest in enka amongst young Japanese.
