Misono began her musical career with the group Day After Tomorrow, who paused activity in 2005. Her solo career debut was held at Velfarre (a popular dance club owned by Avex which is now closed) in 2006.

It was well known that Misono had begun to gain weight after debuting with Day After Tomorrow. Some even say that was the reason for the group's loss of popularity. In October 2006, she was part of a weight loss program called "MTV Girls meet Beauty supported by Takano Yuri". Her beginning weight was 56.2 kg. (123.6 lbs.), with 32.1% body fat. After this 3 month program, her weight was 48.5 kg (106.7 lbs.), with 22.7% body fat. Even this diety program would not be able to bring her back to her weight at the time of Day After Tomorrow's debut, which was 42 kg (92.4 lbs.).

Misono is also sister to pop/R&B singer Koda Kumi.
