With the nickname "Yuming" (which she got at age 13 from a Chinese artist). At her debut she was known as Arai Yumi. In 1976, she married her producer Matsutoya Masataka, and adopted his last name. She is very well known as having been a prominent figure in making Japanese music what it is today. She's also regarded as one of Japan's greatest song writers of all time.
